Michael Anastassiades, from a show at Melas Martinos

In Living Colour. This week’s exhibition recommendations in Athens 15-21.12

This week in Athens, three exhibitions explore the many ways colour shapes our experience of art. Each show treats colour not merely as decoration but as a force that structures space, evokes memory, and shapes perception. Whether through bold geometric compositions, luminous light installations, or rhythmic abstractions, these exhibitions reveal how colour can guide the eye, stir emotion, and transform the ordinary into something remarkable. Together, they remind us that the palette of the present is always built from layers of observation, intention, and imagination.
May your weekend be full of moments that shine in unexpected hues.

Michael Anastassiades — All Colors Will Agree in the Dark
Melas Martinos, Athens
On view through 24.1.2026

Michael Anastassiades presents a thoughtful exploration of light, colour and balance, drawing on theories from Aristotle to Newton and Goethe. The exhibition centres on bamboo RGB constructions where coloured beams meet, miss or converge, revealing how fragile the idea of white light can be. Around them, bronze prickles enlarged to unfamiliar scale, a basalt stool echoing ancient forms, and suspended glass tubes held by nautical knots extend his investigation into material, structure and perception.Across the upper floor, models, vessels and stones create a quieter dialogue about memory and form. The show unfolds with clarity and restraint, offering a precise yet atmospheric study of how light shapes the way we see.

Geometric Abstraction — Opy Zouni, Etel Adnan, Samia Halaby, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Ebtisam Abdulaziz, Lubna Chowdhary. Curated by Yannis Bolis
B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation for the Fine Arts and Music, Athens
On view through 22.02.2026

Six pioneering women in geometric abstraction are brought together at the B. & M. Theocharakis Foundation, offering a compelling exploration of form, memory, and cultural heritage. The exhibition presents Opy Zouni, Etel Adnan, Samia Halaby, Saloua Raouda Choucair, Ebtisam Abdulaziz, and Lubna Chowdhary in dialogue across continents, generations, and artistic traditions. From Choucair’s modular structures and Halaby’s dynamic compositions to Chowdhary’s architectural forms, the works reveal how geometric motifs can carry memory, identity, and cultural reflection. Adnan’s luminous landscapes and Abdulaziz’s mathematically-inflected pieces expand the visual and intellectual field, while Zouni’s cross-cultural dialogue forms the exhibition’s central axis. Together, these artists show that abstraction is not only a Western invention but a global language—simultaneously poetic, political, and philosophical.

Stanley Whitney — Return to the Garden
Gagosian, Athens
On view through 17.01.2026
Stanley Whitney’s latest exhibition at Gagosian presents a vibrant series of new and recent paintings, marking his first solo show in Greece since Documenta 14 in 2017. Titled *Return to the Garden*, the exhibition evokes a sense of harmony and openness, offering viewers a space to engage with color and perception free from narrative constraints.
Whitney arranges roughly rectangular fields into loose grids, their colors layered and juxtaposed to create energetic relationships across each canvas. Repeated hues and horizontal bands establish a subtle rhythm, where variations resonate like patterns in jazz or echoes of quiltmaking. The result is a set of abstractions that balance compositional rigor with playful freedom, revealing how color alone can generate form, tension, and lyricism.
