A tour of the National Gallery of Athens

As in all important European cities, Athens also boasts a national gallery that houses the local artistic treasures. Nearly 20,000 works of art are in the gallery’s collections, and the display is rich in painting and sculpture from different periods. On the tour we will discover the artistic treasures of Greece, diving into the rich space of Greek and European art, from the post-Byzantine period to modern masterpieces, including iconic works by El Greco, Cézanne and other renowned artists. The history of modern Greece is full of dramatic changes that greatly influenced the social and cultural fabric of the country, as well as art. The long Ottoman rule, the rapid transition from monarchical to democratic rule, the industrial revolution, radical economic changes – all these permeated the local art and are evident in it.
